Creative Healing in the Face of Trauma, Grief, and Dissociation By Larry Ruhl

Attempting to comprehend and digest the complex trauma I endured as a child felt like an abyss with no hope for light. I resisted and resented therapy, eventually giving in as my hopelessness grew. Hearing my therapist’s words of "Slower is Faster" did not initially offer much optimism. Over the course of fifteen years, I worked to navigate the intricate roads of addiction, rage, suicidal ideation, gender and sexuality confusion, and learning to live with the intolerable. Through lived experience, I will share the unexpected pitfalls and the victories of recovery along with the creative process which sustains me today.

Check out the conference agenda. Hope to see you there in person or virtually!

Creative Recovery: Exploring Alternatives in Healing from Trauma by Larry Ruhl

As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and complex trauma, my healing journey has taken many twists and turns. Through writing, visual arts, and creative immersion, I have found ways to not only survive but to heal and thrive. By sharing my experience, not only as a survivor but as an artist, I find community and connection. In this show and tell presentation, we will discuss the effects of trauma and dissociation and how from that darkness, beauty, in many forms, can emerge.

Reclaim YOU: Living with Complex Trauma, Dissociation, and Addiction by Larry Ruhl

As I began to process a childhood with a sexually abusive father and a mentally ill mother, my life unraveled. My quest to navigate life with the burden of a childhood I did not ask for led me to question my sexuality, my purpose, and more. I was terrified, yet compelled to share my story, in hopes of helping others. Through sharing my recovery journey from not only my childhood, but also addiction, dissociation, and complex trauma, I’ve connected with others and allowed them to connect with me. And this connection is life changing.

Reading/Discussion of Breaking the Ruhls: A Memoir

Larry Ruhl will read from and discuss his new memoir Breaking the Ruhls (Central Recovery Press, February 2018), which details his coming to terms with complex childhood trauma: paternal incest and maternal mental illness, which led to depression, addiction, and difficulty accepting his homosexuality. It’s a searing story and a poignant narrative of healing and recovery, one that breaks through many deeply held societal taboos.

Woodstock Bookfest: The Donahue Interview| Hudson Valley Secrets

Larry Ruhl will be one of three writer panelists at The Donahue Interview.

Each year, the Woodstock Bookfest is honored to have WAMC’s Joe Donahue host one of our most popular events, The Donahue Interview.
